From BBC Online:
Last Updated: Thursday, 22 November 2007, 13:32 GMT Cult show Survivors to be remade The BBC is to remake cult 1970s series Survivors, it has announced.
The original series centred on a post- apocalyptic world in the aftermath of a plague which killed more than 99% of the global population.
The remake will be set in the present day and follow a group of individuals as they fight for day-to-day survival.
Sci-fi writer Terry Nation created the original series. He also wrote Blakes 7, and created the Daleks - Doctor Who's arch enemy.
The BBC secured the rights to The Survivors after months of negotiations with Nation's estate.
Launched in April 1975 on BBC One, Survivors ran for 38 episodes over three series.
'Brave' programme
Kate Harwood, head of series and serials at BBC Drama Production, said: "The opportunity to remake Survivors for a modern generation proved irresistible.
"After months of negotiations, I am delighted that one of British television's great cult series will return with original stories packed with adventure and spirit set against the backdrop of our own recognisable world."
The new series will be written by Adrian Hodges, who also wrote Ruby In The Smoke, Shadow In The North, Charles II and Primeval, and will be broadcast on BBC One.
He said: "Survivors was one of the bravest and most exciting programmes of its time and I'm thrilled to be involved with re-imagining it for a new audience.
"I remember its original impact vividly and I hope we can make a similar impression with the new version.
"Its themes remain as relevant as ever and while we will be staying faithful to many aspects of the original, we will also be bringing the story into the 21st Century and making it accessible to contemporary audiences."

What fantastic news!
This is/was one of my all-time favourite BBC drama series, along with the brilliant 'Edge of Darkness' - I just love 'what if' scenarios!
I only hope they manage to do it justice. We recently bought the whole first series on video, but are now waiting for series 2 and 3 DVDs to come down in price.
Just hope it gets the green light, and is actually made!

I enjoyed series 1 & 2 when it was on UK Gold donkey's years ago. Series 3 was okay but not as good IMO. It seemed to lose its way.
I will probably have a look at this. Not keen on remakes. Shows a lack of imagination. But it will be interesting how they do it for the 21st century when everyone relies so much on modern technology like the Internet and mobiles.

I was really chuffed when I read this.
I hope they remain true to the original.
I remember having a thing about Ian McCulloch when it was on. ;D

It was a very interesting concept, which of course has been done a few times since but usually after some nuclear disaster.

My Scottish friend is not happy about this remake yet likes the remake of Battlestar Gallactica. Two-faced methinks.

I never realised that Lucy Flemming ( who played one of the main characters ) was related to Ian Flemming, and married to Simon Williams.
I think the reason this programme was so popular was that it was the first of it's kind.
Did anyone ever watch a series called Doomwatch ??

Lucy and Simon's second marriages if I remember rightly. Simon's sister Polly was married to Nigel Havers.
Doomwatch is before my time and I missed the few remaining eps on UK Gold. I heard it was quite good though.
TV in those days was so often ahead of its time. So much imagination lacking nowadays.

From Teletext:
Shane linked to Minder revival
Minder is being revived by channel five with Shane Richie tipped to play Arthur Daley, writes Jonathan Donald.
Scripts are being written for a reworking of the ITV1 drama which ran from 1979 to 1994 about a Thatcherite second-hand car salesman, Daley, and his bodyguard Terry McCann.
"There has been a lot of interest in Richie's next big role after EastEnders and they think he would be perfect," a source told Broadcast.
George Cole starred as Daley and Dennis Waterman played Terry in the original - with Waterman singing the theme tune.
Waterman could have a role in the revival, it's rumoured. But Cole, 82, has said he's against a remake.
Daley was famous for catchphrases like "Terry, the world is your lobster" and called his wife "er indoors" though she was never seen. Waterman left in 1989 and was succeeded by Gary Webster as Daley's nephew Ray.

I bet that's exactly what George Cole's thinking.

This sounds abysmal. When Dennis Waterman left and they did it with that pretty boy, as Arfur's nephew, it wasn't that great.
Dredging it up now, especially with Shane Richie - not the best actor - would be disastrous. Dennis Waterman - also not the best actor in the world - but he worked well as Terry McCann. But I can't help thinking of the Little Britain p* take of him 'Write the feem toon, sing the feem toon'! LOL!

Yeah it wasn't as good with Gary Webster. It lost that something. I remember there was talk a few years ago of a reunion since Arfur would be out of nick. LOL! It was mentioned Dennis Waterman could be in it but clearly nothing's happened. George Cole IS Arfur Daley. Shane Richie's Alfie Moon so they should get knotted.

Shane Richie is a bad Butlin's entertainers, who was only winging it as Alfie Moon, I don't know how anyone mistook him for a serious actor. Minder should be left alone as a classic, and writers should come up with NEW ideas to entertain us.

Well said pearly..I whole heartedly agree
plus things that happened in Minder in the early 80's (un PC stuff) couldn't be done today so it would bea washed out PC version of the original with more swearing to fill in the void of clever writing and acting skills

Agree with all of the above - just goes to show how desperate the TV companies are for ideas.
Minder was great in the early days, but unfortunately was just one of the many shows that went on for far too long, trying to milk it for all it was worth.
This kind of lazy scheduling makes me mad.
I'd much rather see re-runs of the original ... or of any of the other great drama series we've had over the years...or classic comedy shows...or classic films.

I feel the same about Only Fools and Horses. It should have ended long before it did. This is one reason there are very few US series I ever got into. They go on too long, get repetitive and boring. This would get many viewers for the first ep then people would turn off. Hear, hear! A proper classic channel. We had them at one point and now they've gradually disappeared. And not like Granada Plus/ITV3 where they hack them to pieces or Paramount where they mute words like cock up. Patsy

It seems to me that they are all cashing in on the brilliance of Life On Mars and Ashes to Ashes. And Shane Ritchie couldn`t act his way out of a paper bag - let alone copy Dennis Wayermans character. And SR isn`t fit to shine Gene Hunts boots - let alone kiss them
