A serial killer step-dad, nightmare in-laws, a teenage daughter who's been pregnant twice (once to a boyfriend who turned out to be gay!) – Coronation Street’s Platt family has managed to cram more into their lives than a hundred Hollywood blockbusters.
CORONATION STREET FAMILY ALBUMS takes a look at the family whose ability to survive whatever life throws at them has made them one of the most popular families on the street, and re-lives the highs and lows of their most memorable moments.
The street was shocked when widowed Gail Tilsley (Helen Worth) took up with toy-boy lover Martin Platt (Sean Wilson) in 1987, marrying four years later after the birth of their son David (Jack P Shepherd). On the first of many occasions, the Platts made Coronation Street history with the first ever bedroom scene to be shown in the soap.
Martin adopted Sarah Louise (Tina O’Brien) as his own, and after time as a househusband, he retrained as a nurse. From then on things went from bad to worse for long-suffering Gail.
First there was psycho-nanny Carmel (Catherine Cusack) who had become infatuated with Martin whilst working at the hospital before moving into the family home to look after the Platt children. Carmel managed to convince Gail, and herself, that she’d had an affair with Martin.
Next, in 1994, came a real affair for Martin with fellow nurse Cathy Power, and after a number of years staying together, Gail and Martin finally broke up in 2000 after his affair with nurse Rebecca Hopkins. Martin then began an affair with schoolgirl Katy Harris (Lucy Jo Hudson).
Similarly unlucky in love, Gail’s biggest ever mistake and threat to her family came in the form of Richard Hillman and a soap-first of epic proportions – a serial killer as a husband. The Tricky Dicky storyline became the talk of the nation as after he murdered Maxine, Patricia and Duggie, Gail and the children were taken hostage when Richard became intent on taking them all with him to his grave.
Following in her mother’s footsteps, life for Sarah-Louise Platt was always destined to be problematic. At the age of 13, Sarah fell pregnant, resulting in the much-loved Bethany. She then endured the attempted kidnap of Bethany by the child’s paternal grandmother. Sarah’s life seemed to be getting better as she planned her wedding to Todd Grimshaw and the birth of their first child, but once again her world was shattered when Todd revealed that he was gay – another Coronation Street first – and had fallen in love with a hospital nurse. The shock led to Sarah miscarrying baby Billy.
Gail’s eldest son Nick Tilsley (Adam Rickett) endured the demise of his Romeo and Juliet style marriage to Leanne Battersby and ended up in Canada for a while. He came back to the street with mum Gail watching his every move, and his love life continued to prove problematic after his break-up with hairdresser Maria (Samia Ghadie).
And then there’s David, whose formative years have resulted in storylines of general boyhood naughtiness and cheekiness – so far. With parents like his, how long will it be before he too has storylines of dramatic proportions?
CORONATION STREET FAMILY ALBUMS features Sean Wilson, Helen Worth, Tina O'Brien, Jack P Shepherd, Adam Rickett, Sue Nicholls who plays Gail’s mother Audrey Roberts, Sally Whittaker (Sally Webster), Jane Danson (Leanne Battersby), Bruno Langley (Todd Grimshaw) and his screen mum Sue Cleaver.
CORONATION STEET FAMILY ALBUMS is produced by Nickie Lister and the executive producer is Sarah Murch. It is a Granada production for ITV1.
