The Barlows
Forget the Beckhams and the Windsors, the Barlows from Coronation Street are the family who have really got the nation talking throughout the years with storylines that have had us on the edge of our seats.
This week’s CORONATION STREET FAMILY ALBUMS takes a look at the complicated lives of the Barlows, and re-lives the highs and lows of their time on the street.
Since the very first episode of Coronation Street back in 1960, generations of viewers have grown up with the fantastically dysfunctional members of the Barlow clan, including Ken's numerous offspring and lovers, Tracy’s wicked dealings with Roy and Hayley Cropper, and Peter’s bigamist ways.
Love triangles have become a bit of a habit for the family: in the 80s Deirdre found herself torn between Ken and his arch rival Mike Baldwin, then more recently Ken’s son Peter found himself saying ‘I do’ twice to barmaid Shelly and florist Lucy, mother of his son.
And for all of Ken’s high morals, it seems his fathering skills are sadly lacking, having turned out problem kids, the worst being his adopted daughter Tracy.
After a troubled childhood, Tracy overdosed on ecstasy and ended up in hospital with kidney failure. She survived the ordeal, but Deirdre’s new husband Samir Rachid didn’t – he died in a car crash on his way to the hospital to donate his kidney to the young girl who would shortly become the bane of the street.
After a failed marriage and a spell in London, Tracy returned to Coronation Street and was soon in bed with Dev Alahan, not knowing that he’d slept with her mother the year before. Next for Tracy came a one-night stand with Steve McDonald, a pregnancy, and the worst of her wickedness came to light. She pretended the child was Roy Cropper’s after giving Roy a date-rape drug, then agreed to sell the baby to the desperate Roy and Hayley. After taking their money to go on holiday, she then decided to keep baby Amy – whose father is really Steve McDonald – and to ruin Steve’s wedding to Karen!
Ken too has endured many a convoluted storyline since he first appeared in the very first episode – and many lovers. As well as marriages to Valerie Tatlock, Janet Reid and Deirdre Langton, Ken had affairs with secretary Wendy Crozier, Alma Sedgewick, who had just finished with Mike Baldwin, Maggie Redman, a mother of one of his pupils, and hairdresser Denise Osbourne who had his son Daniel.
The programme features interview with William Roache (Ken), Anne Kirkbride (Deirdre), Kate Ford (Tracy), Chris Gascoine (Peter) and Sally Lindsay (Shelly).
CORONATION STEET FAMILY ALBUMS is produced by Nickie Lister and the executive producer is Sarah Murch. It is a Granada production for ITV1.
