Where were you in 1973? NYPD Detective Sam Tyler (Jason O'Mara) finds himself in the cultural hotbed of New York City in the tumultuous times of the Vietnam War, Watergate, women's lib and the civil and gay rights movements - without a cell phone, computer, PDA or MP3 player -- suddenly hurtled back in time when he's ripped from 2008 after being hit by a car while chasing down a criminal. He's trying mightily to understand what has just happened to him and how he can get back "home."

What exactly is going on here? It's like Sam is on a different planet. It's the Wild West out there: uncontrollable criminals, police on the take... whom can he trust? Forced to use a different moral code and without hi-tech crime fighting techniques, Sam clashes with his new boss at the 125th Precinct, the irascible Lieutenant Gene Hunt (Harvey Keitel), who would rather use his fists than his brains to solve a crime. Hunt, who has earned the adoration of the men under him, does his best to hide his humanity behind a gruff exterior and great gut instincts, in contrast to Sam's more politically correct cutting edge style. But the two begrudgingly combine to make a powerful team -- whether they like it or not.

Then there are the other squad members of the 1-2-5. Detective Ray Carling (Michael Imperioli), a big, mean guy in a street-fight with life. Ray may be a rough, tough sexist, but when the chips are down, he's a handy guy to have in your corner. Until Sam came along, Ray was the golden boy of the force and Gene's go-to guy. It's the man's man against Sam's charming wit, charisma and eerie futuristic knowledge of not just police procedure -- but the whole culture -- that puts them toe-to-toe in this face-off for Gene's approval.

Annie Norris (Gretchen Mol) is a member of the Police Women's Bureau. At a time when females were only allowed to do menial tasks and not real police work, she's the smartest person in the room. Little does she know that her dream of becoming a real cop will come true. Right now she's struggling to deal with being undermined, under-used and in general against the sexism of the times. However she's the one person Sam can turn to to help guide him in his new reality. Theirs is a strong bond. After all, they're both outcasts.

Rookie Detective Chris Skelton (Jonathan Murphy) is a sweet guy trying to make it in this uncompromising world, but right now he's out of his league with Gene and Ray. He's impressed with Sam's new way of looking at and thinking about policing, but that means he's at odds with Gene and his old school style.

In his 2008 life, Sam was in love with Maya Daniels (Lisa Bonet) and, although Maya and Annie will never meet, Annie's workplace battles have paved the way for Maya to become a full-fledged cop. But a fascinating, unique love triangle evolves between Sam's "real" in-the-moment friendship with Annie, his longing to get back to Maya and the fantasy of what could be.

At home in Sam's apartment building in the East Village, there's Windy, a free-spirited, post-hippie chick who can teach Sam a thing or two about the cultural revolution taking place in front of his unbelieving eyes.

Just how will Sam deal with all this ambiguity while trying to remain a top detective, as he desperately attempts to get back to 2008? He might just find things aren't so dissimilar in New York circa 1973 and 2008.

US Mars remake slumps
Ratings for the US version of BBC hit Life On Mars have slumped by nearly one third for the second episode.

The audience for the drama which stars Harvey Keitel as Gene Hunt dipped from 11.33m to 8.33m on ABC. It was beaten by CBS rival Eleventh Hour with 11.91m.

Also doing badly in the ratings is the US remake of Aussie comedy Kath & Kim which was seen by 6.1m, losing 20% of its first episode audience on NBC.

"Tuesday's Dead" - Sam Tyler finds it difficult to separate a life-and-death hostage situation taking place at County Hospital from his own strange circumstances. It is stable. Since episode 1 which got over 11 million (households or persons not sure which) watching. Since then it has had between 8.4m-8.9m. With the higher end of that being the last two episodes.

The US are getting more obsessed about demographics as well as overall ranking and apparently it is winning an important women demographic (which might be its saving grace) even though in overall viewers it is coming 3rd in its slot.

One of its problems however good or bad it is, is that it airs in a highly competitive time-slot - Thursday at 10pm which has been the home of 'ER' for the last 14 years (and now in its final season). 'Life On Mars' also premiered the same week as another remake of a British show, 'The 11th Hour.' Both shows were over-publicised. Episode 2 of 'The 11th Hour' gained the viewers 'Life On Mars' lost and they haven't come back but 'Life On Mars' hasn't lost anymore.

ABC have now aired 6 episodes and when I last looked they only had 7 scheduled (number 7 being on the 20th November). Although at present 'Life On Mars' is set to return to screens on the 11th December but it is unclear if that will be a rerun at this stage, it could also be cancelled.

After just 6 episodes the show is at a key stage in choosing a series' fate. ABC could perhaps try another time-slot however what isn't good for 'Life On Mars' is that it airs directly after 'Greys Anatomy' a top 5 show in the US. The fact it is not benefitting from the huge viewership of GA is one of the things the executives will be be paying attention too.

"Grey's Anatomy" and "E.R." both delivered strong performances on Thursday, but it wasn't enough to top CBS' across-the-board strength.

Overall, CBS averaged a 9.0 rating/14 share for the night, easily beating the 7.5/12 for ABC and NBC's 5.0/8. FOX's 3.1/5 and The CW's 2.6/4 trailed.

Among adults 18-49, the race was far closer, though CBS won with a 4.1 rating. ABC was close behind in the key demographic with a 3.9 rating, followed by the 3.3 rating for NBC. FOX's 2.2 rating was enough for fourth over the 1.6 rating for The CW.

CBS kicked the night off with a 7.7/12 for "Survivor: Gabon," topping the 6.3/10 for "Ugly Betty" on ABC. NBC's "My Name Is Earl" and "Kath & Kim" held off FOX's "Kitchen Nightmares" for third, leaving The CW in fifth with a 2.7/4 for "Smallville."

At 9 p.m. CBS' "CSI: Crime Scene Investigation" won the hour with an 11.5/17. That was better than the 10.3/15 for "Grey's Anatomy," but the ABC medical soap won the hour in the 18-49 demographic. NBC was third with "The Office" (4.9/7) and "30 Rock"(4.5/7). FOX's "Kitchen Nightmares" beat the 2.5/4 for The CW's "Supernatural."

Anthony Edwards' return to "E.R." gave NBC a 10 p.m. demographic win, but the show's 6.5/11 was only good for second overall behind the 7.6/13 for CBS' "Eleventh Hour." "Life on Mars" was third with a 6.0/10.

ABC took second place on Thursday in Total Viewers (11.2 million) and paced just two-tenths
out of a tie for first with CBS among Adults 18-49 on the night (3.9/10 vs. 4.1/10). The Network
won the night for the 2nd week in a row in Adults 18-34 (3.4/9), holding the No. 1 position for
the 4th time in 5 weeks. In addition, ABC took first place with Women 18-49 (5.4/13) for the
5th consecutive week, and marked its 8th straight week this season as the evening’s No. 1
network among Women 18-34, surpassing its nearest competitor by 48% on the latter measure
(4.9/13 vs. 3.3/9 - NBC).
“Ugly Betty” (8:00-9:00 p.m.)
ABC's “Ugly Betty” took second place in the 8 o’clock hour in Total Viewers (9.2 million) and
Adults 18-49 (2.8/7), defeating NBC’s comedies in the time period for the 5th week in a row
on both counts (“My Name is Earl”/”Kath & Kim” = 6.0 million & 2.4/6 in AD18-49). “Betty”
took full control of the hour in Women 18-34, beating CBS’ “Survivor” by 21% (3.5/10 vs.
2.9/8) and tallying its 8th straight week this season as the No. 1 program in its time slot with
young women.
• “Ugly Betty” attracted its biggest audience since its season premiere 7 weeks ago – since
9/25/08.
“Grey’s Anatomy” (9:00-10:00 p.m.)
For the 3rd straight week and the 4th time in the past 5 weeks, ABC’s “Grey’s Anatomy”
qualified as Thursday’s No. 1 TV show in the key Adult 18-49 sales demo. The ABC medical
drama defeated CBS’ drama competition in the 9 o’clock hour, “C.S.I.,” by 16% in Adults 18-
49 (5.9/14 vs. 5.1/12) and by 70% in Adults 18-34 (5.6/15 vs. 3.3/8). “Grey’s” also registered as
the night’s No. 1 show with Adults 18-34 for the 4th time in the last 5 weeks.
“Life on Mars” (10:00-11:00 p.m.)
ABC’s “Life on Mars” bested its CBS freshman drama competition in the 10:00 p.m. hour,
“Eleventh Hour,” for the 6th week in a row and Women 18-34 (2.7/7 vs. 2.5/7). The two shows
tied among Adults 18-34 (2.1/6).
A note about increasing DVR penetration and year-to-year rating comparisons: Year-to-year
rating comparisons based on the Live + Same Day data stream are distorted by the level of DVR
penetration in the Nielsen sample, which has jumped up to 28% currently, from 21% at the same
point in 2007.
More viewers are watching shows on their own timetables, which may not be reflected in the
overnight next day numbers. The only truly valid year-to-year comparison would be one based on the
Live + 7 Day metric, once those stats are released by Nielsen.
