What’s it like to grow up on the most famous street in Britain, in front of a television audience of up to 15 million?
THE KIDS FROM CORONATION STREET looks back at the dramatic screen lives of favourite young Corrie stars, both past and present, as they so publicly negotiated their way towards those troublesome teenage years - with flushed first kisses, teenage pregnancy, problem parents and spectacular adolescent fashion faux pas.
The show tracks down former child cast members to reveal how life’s been treating them since they left the street. While some went on to launch pop careers or scaled further heights of stardom, others sank without trace.
And with the changing faces of the characters, cast members past and present recall the plotlines, the headlines, and what growing up on the Street has meant to them.
The show features interviews with:
DAVY JONES, who made his television debut on Coronation Street as Ena Sharples’ grandson Colin Lomax in 1961 at the age of 15. He went on to land the starring role as the Artful Dodger in Oliver and moved to Broadway, where he was cast by NBC in the television show The Monkees, launching a whole new pop career.
DAWN ACTON was 11 when she took on the role of Tracy Barlow in 1988, leaving eight years later when her character moved to London. Dawn opened a bakery with her mother and studied psychology, before returning briefly to the street for the marriage of her character to Robert Preston in 1997 and again 18 months later when the marriage broke up. Kate Ford then landed the role in 2002 after a re-audition. Now 27, Dawn is happily working as a DJ and lives with her partner and their little boy in Manchester.
GEORGIA TAYLOR played Toyah Battersby for five and a half years from 1997 at the age of 17. She was written out so that she could pursue other acting roles. Georgia (real name Clare Jackson) went on to roles in a number of TV dramas including Where The Heart Is, Red Cap, The Royal, and Blackpool.
WARREN JACKSON played Nick Tilsley for 16 years between 1981 and 1996 and literally grew up on the street. He was cast even before he was born as his parents were friends of Christopher Quentin who played his on-screen father Brian Tilsley. His first appearance was at just 10 days old. Warren left to concentrate on his studies, then Adam Rickett was then cast as Nick in 1997.
JOSEPH GILGUN played Jamie Armstrong, son of Tricia Armstrong, for three years from 1994. A sort of Chesney of his time – an adorable character with a neglectful mother – Joseph was ten when he took on the role and managed to combine working on the street with his education. Today, Joseph still acts and in studying art.
LYNSAY KING played Sarah Louise Platt for 12 years between 1987 and 1999, also growing up on the street from a newborn baby. She initially shared the role with her twin sister Leah before she sadly died of cot death, leaving Lynsay to take on the role full-time. Lynsay left to concentrate on her schooling and to become a ‘normal’ teenager and is now 17.
SALLY ANN MATTHEWS played red-haired Jenny Bradley between 1986 and 1993 from the age of 16. As one of Rita Fairclough’s papergirls, she was responsible for introducing her father Alan to Rita, who ended up trying to kill Rita before finally getting his comeuppance at the wheels of a tram in Blackpool. Now 34 and married with children, Sally Ann continues to act.
BRUCE JONES, alias Les Battersby, talks about working with his ‘girls’ and award-winning young actor SAM ASTON (Chesney), and we hear from Sam himself what it’s like to be hailed as the nation’s favourite Coronation Street kid.
The show also features interviews with current cast members including JANE DANSON (Leanne Battersby), NIKKI SANDERSON (Candice Stowe), JACK SHEPHERD (David Platt), SAMIA GHADIE (Maria Sutherland), JENNIE McALPINE (Fizz Brown), SIMON GREGSON (Steve McDonald), and the parents of baby BEN BERESFORD (Joshua Peacock).
THE KIDS FROM CORONATION STREET is a Granada production for ITV1. It is produced and directed by Jason Beresford and executive produced by Mark Robinson.
