Tennant to quit BBC hit Doctor Who
David Tennant has announced that he is vacating the Tardis and leaving the BBC's Doctor Who series at the end of next year.
Tennant's decision brings to an end his popular four-year tenure as the time lord.
The BBC confirmed that the actor will complete the filming of four special episodes to be screened this year and in early 2010 as well as 2009's Christmas special.
Tennant, who is the tenth incarnation of the immortal time-traveller, has starred in three series and three Christmas specials.
He has drawn praise for his reprisal of the role after Christopher Eccleston left in 2005.
He said: "I've had the most brilliant, bewildering and life changing time working on Doctor Who. I have loved every day of it.
"It would be very easy to cling on to the Tardis console forever and I fear that if I don't take a deep breath and make the decision to move on now, then I simply never will.
"This is all a long way off, of course. I'm not quitting, I'm back in Cardiff in January to film four special episodes which will take Doctor Who all the way through 2009.
He added: "I feel very privileged to have been part of this incredible phenomenon, and whilst I'm looking forward to new challenges I know I'll always be very proud to be the Tenth Doctor."

It seems we have been waiting for this announcement since he took the job. !! One of the names I have heard for his replacement is John Simm, but how could it be him if he is The Master

He'd only play it the same anyway. We're rapidly running out of Doctors and since RTD got rid of the Time Lords, he can't be given a new regeneratin cycle to get around that.

Y`know who would make a great doctor? Phillip Glenister. And it would be great to see 'Gene and Sam' together again on screen.

They need someone who is relativley unkown and who won't quit as soon as something better comes along...preferably someone a bit older

Steven Moffatt isn't interested in an older Doctor though. But someone in their 40s or early 50s would be better. Get it back to father figure/friend relationship with no lurve bollocks and ditch the families.

I agree Pats and Nick. A virtually unknown actor in his 40`s/50`s would work great. Possibly a Welsh actor?? He doesn`t have to have a Welsh accent though. After all DT is Scottish, and he doesn`t have an accent on Dr Who

Nothing wrong with the accent. Better than plummy English. Sylvester McCoy kept his Scottish accent and it's a shame DT didn't.

From ITV and GMTV:
Sylvester McCoy tells GMTV Andrew Sachs and his grandaughter should replace David Tennant 30/10/2008
Former Dr Who star, Sylvester McCoy, revealed on GMTV his favourite for the new Time Lord - Andrew Sachs, and his granddaughter Georgina Baillie as his assistant.
Asked on the breakfast TV show who he’d like as the next Doctor, McCoy said: “Well, Andrew Sachs. I think the BBC should put their money where their mouth is and give the job to Andrew Sachs. Because the very first Doctor was an older man - and he came down to Earth with his granddaughter, Sarah Jane. So there’s Andrew Sachs and his granddaughter – the BBC could give them a nice, good acting role, and a good paycheque.”
GMTV’s Kate Garraway replied, “That would be interesting, you could have Russell Brand and Jonathan Ross inside the Daleks.”
McCoy added he understood why David Tennant was leaving the Tardis, saying, “I’m not really surprised, he did three great years, and with his huge success at the Royal Shakespeare Company playing Hamlet, it seems like a sensible thing to do.”
GMTV MUST BE CREDITED IF ANY QUOTES ARE USED

Despite the goof because it was Susan, not Sarah Jane, LOL!

A bit more on his replacement From DS
Former Eastenders star Tom Ellis is reportedly in the running to play the next Time Lord.
The 29-year-old has apparently emerged as a candidate to take over from David Tennant, who is to step down from Doctor Who at the end of next year.
Ellis, who is married to Tamzin Outhwaite, played Dr Oliver Cousins in the BBC soap during 2006. Other names linked to the iconic role include Robert Carlyle, Paterson Joseph and David Morrissey.
A BBC source told The Mirror: "Tom is the frontrunner for the job and is very interested."
Ellis previously appeared on Doctor Who in the role of Thomas Milligan.
Who is Paterson Joseph ??

I know the same. It's a bit like Finetime Fonteyn and you don't forget it but can't place him off hand. Why can't they have an older actor in his 40s/50s? Patsy
