Anyone getting deja vu? Are they desperate to fill the papers? From the Sun:
Golden oldies will Corrie on
Published: Today CORRIE bosses have denied rumours that three of its oldest cast members are getting the chop.
It’s been reported that golden oldies Betty Driver (Betty), Eileen Derbyshire (Emily) and Barbara Knox (Rita) would face the axe from the ITV soap, but a spokesman has said that’s not going to happen – and that the actresses have some big storylines lined up this year.
He explained: "The producer Kim Crowther sees the older actors in the show as absolute Coronation Street gold and would never seek to lose them.
"Barbara Knox and Eileen Derbyshire will be leading some big storylines in 2009.
“Betty Driver always provides gravitas behind the bar at the Rovers and we will continue to seek to use her where we can."
Well she’s definitely needed to make her hot pot anyway!

I agree that they are Corrie gold and should never be axed - they should leave when they want to leave. Although I wonder what storylines Reet and Emily will get?

Probabaly something stupid involving Norris!
It would be nice if they had a decent storyline - Emily was good during the Ed stuff.

Oh more than likely. Unless Reet marries Eileen's dad and leaves. After all, she is SUPPOSED to have sold the shop to bug eye 6 months ago!
She was and better than Reet's rubbish with Stacey.

I am really glad this was just another tabloid filler and not true.
The day the excellent older actors are axed, and young programme fodder is introduced.....is the day I stop watching Corrie !!

The thing is, once they all die, who is there to replace them?

Well the next generation of characters will get old by then - i.e Liz, Deirdre, Gail, Sally, Kevin!
Because Kevin refused to sell the garage to Tony I assume there was no point in him proceeding with buying the Kabin.

I suppose they want to keep them hanging on till the 55th year so that they don't just have oldies like Ken and Jack . Although Deirdie nearly qualifies now

Oh aye...her. Although I`d much rather her as a character than that awful Jackie Dobbs. She makes my ears and eyes bleed
