Owen’s shock return
By DIANA PILKINGTON
Published: Today
EASTENDERS monster Owen Turner is to make an explosive return to Albert Square when he gets released from jail.
The dad has spent three years inside after trying to gas and drown his daughter Libby Fox.
But he now wants to get back in touch with the Oxford Uni wannabe, played by Belinda Owusu, and ex-wife Diane and prove to them that his alcohol-fuelled violence is behind him.
Enders executive producer Diederick Santer said the return of Owen, played by Lee Ross, is “exciting” — despite the show receiving 128 complaints in 2006 over him beating Denise (Diane Parish) so badly that she lost a tooth.
The Beeb was forced to apologise after the scene showed her being dragged upstairs and battered.
It was part of a domestic violence storyline between the couple.
Mr Santer added: “Lee’s one of the finest actors of his generation, and the scenes he did with Belinda and Diane three years ago were electrifying. I’m looking forward to more.” With his release from prison imminent, Owen also convinces his larger-than-life mum Liz to return to Walford.
The expat (Kate Williams) is fed up with living in Spain — but her former daughter-in-law may not be so keen to see her again.
Mr Santer said: “Kate’s brief appearances were equally memorable as Lee’s. She’s a brilliant comic and dramatic actress and I’m keen to find out more about the unusual Liz Turner.”
Owen wreaked havoc in EastEnders three years ago when, determined that if he couldn’t have Libby then no one would, he got drunk and abducted the terrified schoolgirl.
She escaped his attempt to gas her in his car but he then tried to drown the youngster in a stream then kill himself — which he also botched. Her frantic mum tracked her down to Epping Forest and found her unconscious lying on the stream’s bank.
She was taken to hospital and eventually recovered. Owen was imprisoned.
Libby is now in a solid relationship with Darren Miller and the brainbox is hoping to go study at Oxford.
But she is set to have her world turned upside down by her jailbird dad’s return over the summer.
