Or should it be is he really dead? They aren't saying who killed Horatio Caine - I know we saw him going into a body bag but that could still be part of the plot.
I think it is a ploy to draw out his enemies. If it's not who will they find to replace him? Not sure about CSI Vegas without Bill Peterson. David Caruso may not be everyone's favourite but I think he'll be a hard act to follow.
