From Teletext:
Vera actress to leave Street
A veteran actress in top soap Coronation Street is to leave the programme due to ill health.
Liz Dawn has played Vera Duckworth for 34 years but will exit the show before Christmas - although bosses have not said how they will write her out.
The 68-year-old, who says she has "had the best time of my life" on the show, suffers from the chronic lung disease emphysema and is now too sick to act.

Cant say im surprised by this news, it was always a case of when rather than if she would leave. Oh well, another long term character gone.

And no doubt Bill Tarmey will announce his departure.
Me neither. Even without Liz's illness the Duckies have been glorified extras for years.

Apparently Bill Tarmey is staying.

They have always said when one goes the other will as well. So I doubt Bill, with his own health problems, will stay.

I like Vera and I know its not a surprise as she is very ill but I'm sorry to hear this news . I'm pleased Jack is staying but will that mean they write Vera out as she dies then if he stays ? I hope not

Shame - Vera's a great character, but if the actress who plays her is too poorly to continue we're going to lose her. It's not even an option to replace her with another actress. I wonder how they'll write her out - maybe Paul poisons her with an exotic concoction? Hopefully a happy departure like Hilda Ogden, so that Vera and Jack can go off into the sunset and finally relax? Let's hope they do it properly.

I very much doubt she will appear again. Emphysema is a debilitating illness and if she's too sick to do a few scenes she will be worse by then. My dad met me yesterday and really struggled after walking about 5 mins as we headed for the bus stop and he's not as bad as she is yet.

I agree Patsy. They sometimes say people "may" return for guest appearances etc but rarely do.

You only have to look at Stan Richards of Emmerdale. He did make one last appearance months later but only on a video. With Liz also living mainly in Yorkshire travelling will take it out of her too so it's highly unlikely we'll see her again even if she lived another 10 years.

I can understand why she needs to leave. She has been ill for sometime.
I will miss her, she ( and Bill ) have been the sort of characters that have made Corrie what it is. She will be badly missed. Enjoy your retirement chuck.

it's very sad news..but she has to put her health first......maybe they will move a few streets away..and Jack will still appear in the pub and at the bookies etc occasionally... but Vera will remain unseen.unless she does feel up to making an appearance now and then.??.....all her scenes for awhile have been in the Duckworths house, she hasn't been out on the set for months

There was a scene I caught a while ago (Christmas?) where they were in the pub and Liz was a bit wheezy. I'm surprised she stayed as long as she did.

I think a good idea would be for Jack to win some big money on the horses and for them to buy a bigger house out in the suburbs..then jack could pop back to have a drink with his mates at the Rovers while telling them about Vera living like a 'Duchess'

LOL! Good idea Nick. Thats the only way I can see them being able to write Vera out without killing her off if Bill is staying.
I dont think she has done any scenes out of the Duckworths house since last year. I know she did some in the cafe towards the end of last year as she didnt get on that well with Becky when she first got a job there.

The piece in the NOTW had mistakes. Firstly saying her first appearance in 1974 was at Baldwins factory when Baldwin was never even in it in 1974!

LOL! Now why doesn't that surprise me? The Mirror says it's an exclusive despite the fact the news was announced yesterday evening.

I think in a way I would like to see them retire somewhere together. I can't really imagine a Veraless Jack.
