(From DS)
Coronation Street star Antony Cotton has spoken out to deny claims that the soap's team are unhappy over Michelle Collins's casting.
Earlier today, a newspaper reported that cast and crew at the Weatherfield soap were angry over Collins landing the role of Northern mum Stella Price, the new bar manager at the Rovers Return.
Since Collins made her debut on screen last Thursday, some viewers have criticised the Londoner's attempt at a Mancunian twang. Today's report suggested that show stars feared Coronation Street's credibility would be affected by the supposed 'backlash'.
However, writing on Twitter this morning, Cotton - who plays Sean Tully - commented: "Contrary to rumour, the cast and crew of Coronation Street have far better things to do than stand by idly gossiping about Michelle Collins. What matters far more than her accent (which is great IMO) is the character she is playing."
He added: "Say what you want about Miss Collins... she's so very watchable. And for that reason, this new family is exciting and intriguing!"
Methinks they should be thinking about the credibility of the bloody storylines, rather than worrying about someone's accent!

The thing is, why would anyone need to speak out to say everyone's in happy dappy land and the papers lie if it isn't true? Most stuff they ignore.

The Daily Mail has a clip and I've heard worse. All them thar Southerners like Mark Eden, Brian Capron and even some electrocuted Northerners pronouncing some words Southern like just, money etc. People criticised the casting of Jessie Wallace as Pat Phoenix but by 'eck, she almost had her off, er, pat! Michelle Collins' problem is she's just crap to start with! I give her a year.

Does anyone know how far in advance the scenes are filmed before transmission? If it's a good few weeks difference then she may well have improved since the first couple of eps have been aired. Maybe she was lacking in confidence at first, but her ear is now more in tune with the locals - and she sounds more convincing now, that's why Cotton leapt to her defence. In that case we can maybe look forward to an improvement as time goes by.
I've never heard John Patrtrige (Christian in EE) speak in his own voice - but apparently he has a northern accent. You'd never know it - his London accent is perfect. Conversely when Samantha Womack joined she was quoted as saying at first people thought her accent was too middle class, but that it changed as she got more into the character. I disagree - she's always sounded too posh to play the East End harpy her character is supposed to portray.
Being concerned with accents might come across as snobbish - but it's not. It's an important part of each character. These are supposed to be professional actors - at the top of their tree to be talented enough to be working on the country's biggest programmes, and they have to get it right.

Interesting point regarding John Partridge. I think Hugh Lawrie has the most hilarious American accent but clearly his acting talent wins out.

It`s laughable that prawn is 'spokeman'. There are far better actors/characters who are more worthy to be spokeman... William Roache or Helen Worth for instance.

What, with their slipping accents even though they're more northern? LOL!

It would have been easier for all concerned if she had stuck to her original accent...the same goes for John Michie, although his is more relistic than hers.
I used to get fed up with David Tennants fake accent in Doctor Who and used to wish he had stuck to the one he was born with.

Nope and that includes the BBC. They're not following Labour's orders by moving to Media City and selling Television Centre one little bit. Patsy
