For some time now my PC seems to be on a bit of a 'go slow'
For some reason it seems to effect Proboards.... This is why I don't post as much because it take so long for it to respond. I am sick and tired of reading"Proboards is not reponding"
Any bright ideas of how I can sort this ( without downloading rip off cures will be gratefully received. ;D

Have you deleted your temporary files and cookies?..and also if you have had your comp for a while it may be worth doing a defrag.
And also doing a spyware search..I use Spybot..it's very good
Have you tried doing a broadband speed test?...if it isn't satisfactory complain to your broadband provider ..tell them you aren't happy and are considering changing Internet providers..they may just boost you speed..they did with me

What operating system are you running Sooty? Win XP, Vista or Windows 7?

Mine has been very slow today..I usually get around 6.9-7 megabytes...I'm only getting half a megabyte today !!...seems odd because AOL are taking over my phone line tomorrow and have promised me 13.9 MB...I hope they buck up their ideas

I run Windows 7 and IE9 Wendy. Someboards are the normal fast speed but proboards are terrible.
I delete tempory internet files and it de-frags itself automatically every week. I also have AVG. I don't touch cookies.....worried I might send everything mad.

Sounds strange to me Sooty that only proboards are affected. We had an offer to go with with 3 into one deals from the cable company the other day. I don`t think I`ll bother though as I had a 45 minute wait to see if it was available in this area. It is available but doubt if if I`ll bother because of the lengthy wait time. Hubby said we should be getting the FIOS around here eventually anyway. I`m sure fibre optic lines are better than the DSL we have now.
I`ve heard quite a few complaints from customers of the cable companies with slow speed in this area. And I don`t like the idea of having a bundled system of phone, internet and cable. Once one goes out, they all do.

Ah IE9! That could be your problem. Several people I know upgraded and it gave them nothing but trouble.

We are now getting about 6.5 Meg, which is very good for this area (check out Broadbandspeedchecker. com to compare with others near your postcode).
Took a lot of ear-bashing to BT to get it sorted (at worst it was down to 0.5!), but was worth it, and have to say that the customer service is pretty good - best way to contact them is via e-mail - they seem to be around 24/7, and have always followed up on their calls to check everything is OK).
I know there are probably cheaper/better than BT, but we've always had fair service from them, and 'better the devil you know' springs to mind!

I'm with Waitrose (now Greenbee) who get theirs from Plusnet. They're a little expensive but customer service is great and problems rare. I complained about the ridiculous 5Gb monthly limit, since ads gobble it up and was told I can have 20Gb because I was a good customer. LOL!

That`s what bothered me about switching to Chentel... the download limit. There wasn`t a cap on it so the Chentel rep said. But sure as eggs are eggs, the moment I reached about 5 gigs I`d be charged extra. I`ve seen it all before. I download at least 10 gigs a week - if not more. And having all 3 phone/internet/tv bundled together was a good idea in theory. But if you lose one, you lose `em all. Na I`ll stick with Frontier DSL for the time being until Frontier brings in FIOS. Fibre optic cable is way faster. That`s the only thing about living way out in the country....we don`t get much choice with the fast speeds like in the towns.

I have just got a new deal with AOL.....I already had my calls and broadband with them..now they have took over my line too
So I get broadband speeds of 15MB (Over double what I was getting before)...all calls are free (including 0870 and 0500) 24/7 and cheaper line rental..all for £24.00 PM
Not bad

You mean TalkTalk, Nick. LOL! No it's not bad compared to some of their past 'offers'. There must be a catch though surely. There's a post office one doing all that for £12 PM or something but there are more catches than a bra hidden in small print so it ends up costing more!

I now get all my calls free and unlimited downloads. Previous deal was costing me a fortune with Fran downloading games from the 'net and me building up my music library!
However, speed of 6.5 is about as much as we can expect out here in the sticks, and it doesn't make much difference which provider you're with. They've promised us fibre-optic 'soon', but I won't hold my breath!

Wow that`s amazing. With Chentel`s deal it was $111 for 3 months for cable/internet/tv. Then it would go up to $149 per month after that. It works out roughly $50 a month each. Which is about £80 a month for all 3.

I'm still lucky if I get up to 2. Years ago, Virgin cable came to Hythe - and that's as far as it got and I'm a mile away!

We've been on fibre-optic now for best part of a year, and the difference is amazing. Consistent speeds, day in day out, and no breaks in service.
BT simply offered it to us, at no extra charge.
We're getting 45-49MB Download, and 8MB Upload.
Would be even faster (upto 100MB), but at the moment fibre-optic only runs up to the nearest roadside 'cabinet', and not all the way to our house.
Brilliant when downloading films and music! ;D

BT are to blame for my current connection woes. They upgraded the cables to fibre optic last year and during that time, my internet went slower than a snail. I thought it would return to normal once they finished but it didn't and the phone had a slight crackle. My ISP reset everything and it was great but still not the super duper speeds fibre optic is supposed to deliver. Everything was reasonably fine until last month when the speeds began to fluctuate, getting as low as 0.002 for upload and crackling became worse. I phoned my ISP and the reset that time failed. I reported it to BT on the 14th and they did absolutely zilch until I ranted on Twitter last Thursday after we couldn't phone out and there was a dialling tone on calls coming in. They gave me a link to a form to fill in which the next day said they couldn't find. Phoned after they had and said they found the fault - hooray! It was one of those fibre optic cables in the exchange. The whole thing (150m) needs replacing. Well here I am 2 weeks after reporting it still waiting and still unable to ring out. My upload speed last night was 0.072. I'm really glad I don't have their broadband when they treat phone customers so badly.

Rather like the NHS, I fear it may be another thing affected by the 'postcode lottery'. We've had problems with BT in the past, but they've always been sorted out pretty rapidly and without much fuss.

Not customer relations, Wend. 9am-9pm on weekdays. Today's codswallop after I moaned on Twitter last night: BT @btcare 2h linerlovers Our suppliers have stated there is a delay as cabling work needs carried out by the local council. The date is 31st May So they need the council to replace THEIR cable in THEIR exchange even though THEY put it in and not the council. They must think people are stupid. Patricia Dempsey linerlovers 3h @btcare I hope it's done then because my dad's paying you for a line he can't use for calls. BT @btcare 1h linerlovers I understand. We'll credit back rental for any service that your dad did not receive. Of course they will - and I won Euromillions last night(!) Patsy
