Prepare to go back on the inside all over again – Channel 5 have picked up the UK rights to Wentworth, the eagerly awaited reboot of classic Aussie drama Prisoner: Cell Block H.
Back in the Eighties, Britain was hooked on the gritty antics of the female prisoners from Down Under.
While the series was bought as a late-night filler by ITV, it turned into a cult phenomenon, famous for its wobbly walls and over-the-top plots.
The new remake, which begins airing in Australia this week and will debut on Channel 5 later this year, promises to be a hard-hitting, edgy series which has already won praise from Aussie critics for the way it turns the original series on its head.
While much-loved characters such as Bea ‘Top Dog’ Smith (Val Lehman) and dopey Doreen Anderson (Collette Mann) still feature, their personalities and situations are radically different in the latest vision, which transports the action to the modern day and stars acclaimed Aussie actresses Danielle Cormack and Catherine McClements.
Danielle will play Bea, Shareena Clanton will play Doreen, Kate Atkinson will play Vera Bennett and Nicole da Silva will play Franky Doyle.
It will be interesting to see if this lives up to the hype. Seems to have a good cast.
