From Sky News etc Matt Smith steps down as Time Lord.Matt Smith will be replaced by the 12th incarnation of Doctor Who in a Christmas special. Smith, 30, who took on the role when David Tennant left in 2010, said it had been "an honour" to play the part. With no one signed up to replace him, Smith's departure immediately raised speculation about whether the next Doctor will be a woman, black or both. Names suggested in newspaper reports include Dame Helen Mirren and Broadchurch star Olivia Coleman, with bookmakers offering odds of 8-1 on a female doctor. The Wire star Idris Elba is also gets a mention. But Harry Potter star Rupert Grint and Russell Tovey of supernatural series Being Human were seen as early 10-1 favourites, according to bookmakers William Hill. The Doctor's current companion, played by Jenna-Louise Coleman, will stay with the show. Any ideas who you would like to see replace him. ?

It was rumoured he was leaving after the 50th so not a surprise. An unknown replacing him I expect.

There are rumours that it could be Billie Piper as the next Dr Who.

I think they should find someone who will age into being William Hartnell, bringing the whole thing mind-bendingly full circle, and then let someone create something new.

Absolutely! By getting rid of Gallifrey they've reduced regeneration options.

I am quite looking forward to seeing him as the Doctor, as you say, nice to have an older actor. I wonder what sort of 'costume' he will wear. ?

Eh???
Whilst he's undoubtedly a great thespian who's acting skills will appeal to the diehard Dr Who fans - Stephen Moffat has failed to realise that the regeneration of interest in Dr Who in the 90's was down to having active and atrractive Dr Whos for the last 17 years ( rather than the previous bozo the clown type characters that saw the show decommissioned for 5 years!!) don't think he'll cut it for very long - not enough action/ fun / attraction appeal to a mass audience - reduced viewing figures will dictate - Disappointing ... - Zeus 1, Neptune, 5/8/2013 12:15
