John Michie will move onto Holby City after his departure from Coronation Street.
Michie - who plays the duplicitous Karl Munro on the ITV soap, will start his new role on BBC One's serial medical drama in early 2014. The Sun reports that he will play a key character in the neurology department at Holby City Hospital.
Michie said: "I'm absolutely thrilled to be joining the cast of Holby City, and I'm looking forward to taking on a new challenge. My mum was a nurse and always wanted me to be a doctor, not an actor. So finally, her wish has half come true."
"We're very excited about John joining the Holby City family," said the show's executive producer Oliver Kent. "He's a great addition to the show, and viewers can look forward to seeing some explosive storylines involving his character."
Karl was responsible for the Rovers Return fire which ultimately led to the death of his lover Sunita Alahan (Shobna Gulati).
Michie is also known for his long stint as Detective Inspector Robbie Ross in crime drama Taggart.
I hope they let him have his Scottish accent back.
