Since they both aren't much liked yet stay under various producers, I'd say it was Kieran Roberts renewing them. He turned Emmerdale crap when he was in charge, did the same for Corrie bar Richard Hillman. I rapidly lost the will to live watching both when he was producer. Richard Hillman's absence showed how they relied on that storyline because the rest was bollocks. He is to blame for hiring Cotton and Kate Ford. He became exec producer in 2006, the same year Kym Marsh was hired. He is probably to blame for all the diabolical storylines too since there were many during 2002-2004.
