Soaps are always being told they're doomed, but Downton, Broadchurch and Mr. Selfridge are just another form of soap. Maybe they'll still have Corrie related mini-series of greater budget? I do agree the humour is very important to balance against the drama, which is why I could never get involved in East Enders as it seemed to have very little levity to the usual proceedings.

I agree with him about the soaps trying to outdo each other and being too reliant on sensationalist storylines

Not just sensationalist, but repetitive/copycat storylines. Carol was out at a writers' group meeting last week, and I (almost accidentally) watched most of a complete Emmerdale episode, and when it had ended, asked myself if I had REALLY watched such awful cr@p for so many years! Just couldn't believe how tired the storylines were and the fact that it bore no relationship to reality in any sense. If it had been funny, exciting, or dramatic, I could have forgiven some of the faults, but it was just so painfully dull and familiar (in a bad way). I suspect the other soaps are just as bad. I think I read an article a few days ago which suggested that soaps may have a limited lifespan if they continue as they are. Can't say I'm surprised when there is so such much more diverse, original, INTERESTING television now available.

I've mentioned in the past Crossroads being made to reduce the number of episodes by the IBA due to concerns about quality. These have proved the old IBA right because once they began the increase to three, quality began to suffer. Three was probably the most they should have stuck at though. ITV are definitely the worst, relying on the soaps for ratings.

ITV are definitely the worst, relying on the soaps for ratings. You're probably right Patsy - just lazy, unimaginative scheduling.

Viewing figures for soaps are well down ..all of last weeks Emmerdale episodes attracted less than 6 million viewers ... even Corrie and EE are well down on the heady days of 23 million (I know people record it and watch it on catch up TV but the figures are still well down)

I don't see why they can't actually end the soaps and start up new ones with some characters and names the same. Pick some popular characters and move them together somewhere else... sort of like 'Are You Being Served Again' if you remember that, or 'Thomas & Sarah' from Upstairs Downstairs. Look how they do it with the old knackered superheroes; start again with a new first issue number and sales go way up. I have an idea for Billy and Becky Mallet returning to Coronation Street, one is a toff developer and the other a social activist and the latter opposes the former's plans to tear the cobbles, Rovers, Kabin and all up and put in a Telecommuter office block or somesuch. Big final storyline and the toff Mallet wins and the other gets told all kind of history from the residents of the place they were born. Then a bunch of them move together somewhere else, maybe a cruise ship, and you get HMS Coronation. Oh, I'm full of idears me.

The mallett twins would only be 15 or 16 Oh yeah... well, wotcher expect from a sillybint? Will have to wait a few more years or dig up some other past twins (maybe the Skilbeck twins didn't die near Emmerdale Farm after all).

I don't compare rating figures now and back a few years for the reason of there being so many more channels to watch.

There were more channels to watch for quite a few years now plus Sky plus boxes and stuff but ratings are still dropping.

The summer holidays, nice weather, Tivo, and hundreds of channels to choose from has really ruined the soaps viewing figures. Crap storylines aren`t helping either. The heyday of 16+ million viewers for one episode have sadly gone by the wayside.
