Vernon was never a fully realised character in the way that say, Steve MacDonald or Lloyd Mullaney were. Consequently, I never thought that he ever really worked. Liz needed a bit of love interest with Jim stuck in the clink, to be sure, but not this guy. Surprised he ever made it past a script conference, and the actor's performance in the role certainly didn't help.
