EXCLUSIVE: CORRIE IN TURMOIL AS SUE FALLS SICK

CORONATION Street's festive episodes have been plunged into chaos after actress Sue Cleaver fell ill.

The star, who plays cab controller Eileen Grimshaw, was violently sick at the weekend.

She was due to film Christmas and New Year storylines but could not make the shoot - at a hospital.

The 40-year-old was comforted at home by partner Brian Owen after a doctor diagnosed severe gastric flu.

A Corrie source said: "Brian said Sue was in a heck of a state.

"There was no way she would make it despite the importance of her being there. We are all wishing her a speedy recovery." Show chiefs hired part of North Manchester General Hospital to film scenes with Sue and Jenny Platt, who plays barmaid Violet Wilson.

But the days were wasted and crews were sent home. They hoped to film them yesterday but Sue was still too ill.

The source added: "It's a big problem whenever anyone is off.

"But Sue is probably going to be off a week so many scenes have to be re-jigged, re-written and re-scheduled.

"Deadlines are so tight now. Production staff are desperately trying to figure out how to catch up. The scenes with Sue are integral."

The Christmas Day episode will see Eileen answer her door to one of son Jason's one-night stands - holding a tot.

The girl gives Eileen the tot, saying it is time he took responsibility.

She summons Jason from the Rovers with girlfriend Sarah Platt (Tina O'Brien), hands him the baby and says: "Happy Christmas".

In the scenes due to have been filmed this week, Eileen will be seen at Violet's bedside after complications set in with her pregnancy.

That does sound nasty and I hope she'll be okay too. Pity the storyline seems boring.

Gastric flu? Seems nothing too serious. Worst that'll happen is she'll lose a bit of weight, and she could probably stand that comfortably.

That's really beside the point, Billy. It's still a nasty thing to have like food poisoning. I had gastric flu a few years ago and it's no picnic.

Still survivable, though. I guess the real story is that it buggered up the filming.

Only reason they told the press as usual. If it had happened during the fortnight off nothing would have been said.

I think something would have been said Patsy as she is an agony aunt for woman`s magazine and they would have mentioned it if Corrie hadn`t.

Gastric flu can be very serious, and can lead to all sorts of other complications down the road depending on the person. With Sues heavy filming schedule (which can be quite stressful), her condition could worsen.
Your comments about her weight Billy I find it in very poor taste. Sue represents the fuller figure women everywhere and they recognise Sue is "one of them' rather than the skinny minnies that are portrayed in the media.

I guess the real story is that it buggered up the filming.

So what if it did? Would you rather Sue carried on filming and then her condition worsen to the effect where her life would be in jeopardy? Don`t you have any compassion?

Typical of this to happen when they may actually be giving Eileen a storyline for once ~ although it does sound like it's mainly about Jason & Sarah & she's just involved as a support character.

Who knows, Jezziekins? There's been a few taken ill while filming. Maybe it's all the stress of ridiculous hours and too many eps.

I agree, Eileen. Glorifed extra in that boring repetitive cycle.

They really have no ideas for storylines so characters just sleep around or are there doing sod all. No one wants to stay any more, mainly due to that schedule.

I`ve said the same thing for years too Jez. I`m surprised there aren`t more actors taken ill.
The weather here has gone crazy too this year. Warm one day, cold the next. The Northern winters will probably take its toll on some of the older ones too.

LOL! I think thats one of the few things we agree on that they should reduce the episodes. I cant see it happening either but one day I hope they will.

Me neither. I desperately want a takeover of ITV then perhaps the new owners will have sense and make decent programmes again instead of filling the schedules with soaps and dross.
