It was 1986 when 18-year-old Sally Seddon marched down the cobbles of Coronation Street and was given a soaking by Kevin Webster driving his van through a puddle.
Twenty-one years on – and two kids, several affairs, a divorce and remarriage later - Sally and Kevin are still together…for the time being.
Sally and Kevin married in October 1986 and took over Hilda Ogden’s house at 13 Coronation Street. Hilda was horrified that her precious lodger Kevin had been snared by “that tarty Sally Seddon” in her white pvc knee high boots.
Actress Jean Alexander, who played Hilda Ogden, is one of the contributors to the programme and said: “When Hilda first met Sally, she took against her immediately. She didn’t know Sally personally but she knew about the family who were rogues and vagabonds.”
But despite the infidelity, jealousy, lies and rows, Kevin and Sally have actually been married for longer than Ken and Deirdre.
Family life for the Websters began calmly enough as Sally raised their daughters Rosie and Sophie, but Kevin threw the first spanner in the works in 1997 by embarking on a steamy affair with Natalie Horrocks, his boss at the garage.
Sally caught the pair of them in bed and kicked Kevin out. The scene was now set for a classic Corrie cat fight.
Actress Denise Welsh who played Natalie Horrocks said: "I loved the fight and I remember doing it thinking I can’t believe I’m in Corrie cat fight. But do you know she certainly revamped Sally’s life. I mean she was off with every Tom, Dick and Harry after Natalie came along. “
Sally certainly settled the score over the years by having flings with garage hand Chris Collins, businessman Greg Kelly, market trader Danny Hargreaves, decorator Alex Jordan, Kevin’s pal Martin Platt and millionaire Ian Davenport.
Kevin and Sally were divorced in 1998 and during the separation Kevin was briefly married to Alison Wakefield. Their baby died in her arms in hospital and Alison was killed after she ran in front of a lorry. He quickly returned to the love of his life and Kevin and Sally were remarried in 2002.
It has been two years since either of them has strayed (Sally’s last fling was with her boss Ian Davenport in 2005) but that doesn’t mean that life is now sweet for the Websters. Their eldest daughter Rosie has rebelled against pushy mum Sally and had underage sex with boyfriend Craig Harris (played by Richard Fleeshman), while youngest daughter Sophie had a crush on her teacher, who's now having an affair with her older sister Rosie.
Jean Alexander says she thinks Hilda would be pleased with how far they’ve come: “Through all their trials and tribulations and various partnerships they are still together. I think Hilda now would be quite pleased with the fact that she’d organised the whole thing.”
Cast members past and present comment on their trials and tribulations, with contributions from Sally Whittaker (Sally Webster) Michael Le Vell (Kevin Webster); Helen Flanagan (Rosie Webster) Brooke Vincent (Sophie Webster)Jean Alexander (Hilda Ogden) Helen Worth (Gail Platt); Denise Welsh (Natalie Barnes nee Horrocks); Barbara Knox (Rita Sullivan) and Stephen Billington (Greg Kelly).
