From Digital SpyCoronation Street's stars celebrated Liz Dawn's time on the show during an emotional farewell party. Liz, who has played Vera Duckworth since 1974, is leaving the ITV1 soap due to ill health. The 69-year-old actress was joined by co-stars Bill Tarmey (Jack Duckworth), Samia Smith (Maria Sutherland), Kym Ryder (Michelle Connor), Alan Halsall (Tyrone Dobbs) and Jane Danson (Leanne Battersby) for a bash held at the Street's Rovers Return pub. Street bosses showed a 15-minute montage of clips from Liz's time on the programme, and producer Tony Wood made a speech about her. "I had a wonderful time tonight," Liz said. "It was a really nice do." Dawn will film her final scenes for the soap next week. I am glad she enjoyed her party. We are going to miss Vera.

In both the Mirror and People they had a piece written by the same pillock who said "producer Tony Wood" gave a speech so DS has clearly got theirs from them.
I used to really like Vera but neither her or Jack have been what they were for years which is a shame. They will both be missed when Bill's time to leave comes. They just don't create characters like them any more.

We certainly are going to miss Vera. I hope they do a special programme with a look back at her time on the show when she leaves on screen.

Maybe they will and not only cover recent years the most either. You can guess at some clips. Blind date and the Rovers squatting.

It would be nice if they showed Vera's first appearance from 1974 with Ivy at the Warehouse.

I was just thinking today, if they've killed her off, i hope it would be natural in a Martha Longhurst/Alf Roberts way, not a sudden illness from nowhere or recent illness (Vera was on screen ill too when we didn't see her)
She deserves that much or go away to Blackpool happily with a great big send off.

I'd still prefer the former as I really cannot see the point in killing Vera off except as a ratings ploy. Mike could've gone to Spain. Fred with Bev. Vera and Jack to Blackpool. They'll probably have her find out about Paul then drop dead of a heart attack.

No doubt AC was there too. Anything for a booze up and get his mug in the papers. Sean Tully never did have any interaction with Vera did he apart from serving her drinks in the Rovers. Will ITV have a special show dedicated to Vera/Liz when she leaves? I hate the thought of Vera going I really do.She`s had some brilliant scenes over the years and I know she will miss Bill Tarmey and vice versa. They were an excellent couple - so believable.

I hope they do CG as she deserves that much after being a loyal cast member for over 30 years. I read Liz Dawn's autobiography earlier this year and it was an excellent read, she had a difficult life before Corrie.

Because they're stupid. It would be nice to give Jack and Vera the sort of send-off Hilda had.

It would be nice to have a send off like Hilda got. Hard to believe that was 20 years ago this Christmas.

On killing off a long-standing character: worth doing, as in the case of a character like Vera : - She definitely ain't coming back.
- Another actor playing Vera would be unthinkable.
- It sets up an opportunity for an absolutely cracking bit of drama ( though with Baldwin, the opportunity was sadly squandered).
In Vera's case, it gives Liz Dawn a chance - a reward, perhaps? really to practice "the craft" and give her acting muscles a proper workout with a poignant death scene, though in Liz Dawn's case, she only ever played Vera as herself, so it'll be a bit like dying herself - what a strange experience that must be for an actor like Liz. Bill Tarmey, on the other hand, has a wonderful knack of turning in little human scale performances that just get you right there. I think he's a terrific actor, and I fully expect to be in floods of tears at Bill's portrayal of Jack's terrible loss.
