It was crap with Gary Webster but at least you had Arfur, Dave, The Winchester Club etc. This is just taking a well known series and trading on the back of it. Recreation, reinvention, remake, sequel. They can call it what they like. It's still unoriginal. The way they're snubbing George and Dennis shows they don't really want them to be any part of it. Yet it was them who created the legend they're ripping off. There was talk years ago of a reunion show with Arfur, Terry and Ray but it never happened. If they'd at least been gracious enough to have George in it in a scene or two with Shane, perhaps handing over his lobster to his nephew, it might make more sense. As they often say, Minder was of its time. Won't work now regardless.

I didn't watch. The trailer was bad enough. But this is a review from the Guardian:
Minder (Five) returned to our screens last night. Let us, first, be thankful for small mercies: Dennis Waterman does not sing the theme tune this time round. Other than that, the reworked version of one of the 80s' most popular programmes was a lacklustre affair. Shane Richie played Archie Daley, Arthur's nephew, embroiled in a wafer-thin plot about a corrupt local councillor and two property tycoons trying to buy an old pub before it got listed status and scuppered their chances of redeveloping the area. Daley hops into Jamie Cartwright's cab to escape his approaching nemesis. Jamie - played by the arrestingly named Lex Shrapnel - turns out to have the highest sense of honour ever displayed by a London taxi driver, and to be handy with his fists. He lays out those who would seek to kneecap Archie ("Clear off and let me get my fare safely to his destination!") and they duly become partners.
Everything has been prettified since Minder mark one. The clothes, the cars, the city and, especially, the minder. Shrapnel (the grandson of Deborah Kerr, a piece of information that brightens the day considerably) has the air of a man who is trying to atone for getting into Bristol instead of Oxford University, not of someone attempting to go straight after a stretch for GBH. The literal and metaphorical grit has gone, as has the faint but underlying sense of menace that enlivened the original. Richie, as anyone who has seen him presenting Don't Forget the Lyrics on Sky will know, is a trouper of the first order, and - given the right material, as he was in EastEnders - a lovely actor. But any programme that still refers to money as "lolly" and contains lines such as "I am somewhat bereaved by that comment, Jamie" is right for no one.

The theme tune was dire, and the rest of it was pretty crappy. Unnecessary waste of time - Lex Shrapnel is nothing special IMO and I doubt I'll look at it again.

Like most re-makes, it got good viewing figures because people tuned in to see if it was as good as the original.
I'd like to see the figures in a month.!

I think with five going digital only soon will hurt it. My dad tapes stuff from terrestial five because he's watching something else on Sky and we don't have Sky+. How many others don't even have any sort of digital?

1.5 million so the Brits didn't do that much to dent it last week.

Reggie Perrin Unplaced Day and time to be confirmed BBC ONE
Martin Clunes stars as Reggie Perrin in this modern-day update of the classic Seventies sitcomA modern-day update of the classic British sitcom The Fall And Rise Of Reginald Perrin, starring Martin Clunes in the title role, comes to BBC One. He leads an impressive cast including Fay Ripley (Cold Feet), Wendy Craig (Butterflies, The Royal), Geoffrey Whitehead (Worst Week Of My Life), Neil Stuke (Game On) and Lucy Liemann (Moving Wallpaper).
Reggie Perrin retells the story of a sales executive on the edge – an average man finding it increasingly difficult to put up with the monotony of life, the disappointing marriage, the office grind as head of disposable razors at male-grooming firm Groomtech and the daily commute. Rebellion begins to build in his mind, in the form of increasingly surreal flights of fancy, and slowly, Reggie begins to say what he really thinks – to his wife, his boss, his fellow commuters ... and, most dangerously of all, to his new colleague, Jasmine Strauss.
As the series begins, Reggie is feeling increasingly frustrated and alienated as he realises that he has worked at Groomtech for 10 years. Reggie's boss, Chris Jackson, introduces him to the beautiful Jasmine Strauss, the new head of balms and lubricants. His wife, Nicola, is too busy for him, so Reggie becomes a little besotted with Jasmine and even has a peek in her office.
The series is written by Simon Nye, the writer behind Men Behaving Badly, and David Nobbs, the writer and creator of the original Seventies show.
Reggie Perrin is played by Martin Clunes; Nicola Perrin by Fay Ripley; Vicky, the secretary, by Kerry Howard; Anthony, one of Reggie's colleagues, by Jim Howick; Steve, another colleague, by Nick Mohammed; Chris Jackson by Neil Stuke; Marion, Reggie's mother, by Wendy Craig; Jasmine Strauss by Lucy Liemann; Monty, Reggie's friend, by Justin Edwards; and William, Nicola's father, by Geoffrey Whitehead.

It was OK, watchable, nothing to write home about.
Reggie's secretary seemed very like the Travel Agent character from Little Britain 'Computer Says No'.

We said exactly the same thing Pearly! ;D
Also thought the two young guys in the office were annoying and unnecessary, but on the whole, it was much, much better than we expected - some genuinely funny moments, and Martin Clunes did actually fit the role very well, with his hang-dog expression.
Wasn't actually going to watch, but will probably continue to do so for now.

I only ever watched the odd episode of this, and didn't much like it. So I thought I would watch the first episode and see if it was any good.
I was pleasantly surprised to find that I actually enjoyed it, a lot I think to do with Martin Clunes who is one of my favourite actors. I will definitely watch the rest.

Nope. They are gits. Although I know someone delighted about Bagpuss. Don't think she ever really grew up (only person I know who still watches Blue Peter and did watch Grange Hill to the end).

Ewan McGregor would be the best choice as Carter in my opinion. Hubby agrees with me - although he says he`s not keen to see it on the big screen, but may watch it when it comes out on DVD ;D

I won't watch it at all. I have the DVDs and love them. It, like so many remakes, are a product of their time.
