Use exactly the same ones Nick, and like you, (fingers crossed), no problems in nearly two years.

Spoke too soon!
Since last major Avast update (version, not definitions), things seem to have slowed down and got a bit 'clunky'.
Have got rid of Avast and gone back to AVG - another highly-rated freebie.

Yes Nick - the new version looked completely different - I think it became available at the end of February.
I suppose I could have rolled back to the previous version, but when you do that you're never sure whether it's as well supported with updates.
Anyhoo, you may be fine - everyone's computer seems to act differently in given circumstances, and ours is getting pretty old now; we're still on Vista.
I've used AVG before, on another computer, and it compares very well with Avast in the reviews.

I'm on Vista. My netbook is W7 basic which is all I need when I'm away. I bought a new W7 laptop in summer but not transferred the stuff across. Keep using this out of habit. LOL!

It's playing up again. I've had to re-install Windows 7 so I am now trying to find all my favourites etc...I hate computers.!!

I reckon you've got serious virus issues Sooty - what anti-virus are you using, and what sort of daily/weekly scanning/cleanups do you do?
Could even be a friend/relative who is unknowingly passing viruses on to you via e-mail.

Do you have an external hard drive, Sooty? A FB friend recently had his laptop stolen and everything was on it. He's bought one now to copy all his files and photos onto.

It's at it again. Had to re-install Windows. If it does it again I'm getting a new one. !! It is taking me ages to do stuff to get it sorted. Computers are the bane of my life. Everytime I switch on I wonder what it will throw up! Now it has this delightful habit of freezing when the mood takes it and is now on a go-slow.

I have had my computer nearly 5 years so I am expecting it to conk out the day after the warranty runs out...thats what happened to my previous comp...exactly one day after my 5 year warranty and it went kapputt and they wouldn't do anything....I think they have a self destruct program in them to do that !!

Buy a new one anyway. Don't wait. I bought this last year as mine was playing up. I kept using it though out of habit. then on the 24th Sept the screen went funny and no matter what I did, it won't settle. It was 4 years old.

Have you not considered getting someone in to look at it Sooty?
We got someone in a few years back to sort our computer. He was brilliant - resolved all our issues, and gave us loads of good advice.
If I recall correctly, he was with us for a couple of hours and didn't charge a fortune.
Must be cheaper than buying a new one, and he may be able to work out why it keeps happening?

The thing that is driving me mad, apart from it upgrading me to IE10 when I didn't want it (so I had to uninstall the wretched thing) is all the Windows updates it keeps chucking at me. I can't remember in the past getting them almost daily. My PC seems to spending all day installing, configuring and re-starting !

Go to Start....Control Panel.... System and Security..... Windows Update..... Then on the left hand side of Windows Updates, choose 'change settings' and then the time and date you want these updates.

You've got Windows Update configured so that it does all updates without your approval.
Easy enough to change, go into Control Panel, then Widows Update, and then Change Settings.
You should be able to change it to 'Check for updates, but let me choose whether to download and install them'.

Yes - that's probably the best general-purpose cleaner. If you can get into the habit, it's good to do your 'housework' every day - the more often you do it, the less time it takes. This is a snapshot of what's in my Security 'arsenal':-
