www.bbc.co.uk/news/entertainment-arts-24426296There are yays and nays. One comment on a newspaper site said it was a shame they didn't invite Ronnie Barker back. LOL!It would be interesting to see what happened to Granville. Maybe he married Nurse Gladys Emmanuel and they're son is the one being run ragged in the shop! Patsy

I don't get how the Americans called it "Are You Being Served Again?" unless they think people are too stupid to realise it had a new name. How on earth could anyone have signed up for it? Wendy Richard certainly didn't need the cash.

It`s still being shown on various PBS stations here Pats. When PBS does a pledge drive a few times a year to raise cash for the channel, they always have some AYBS merchandise to give to the donors. Bags, mugs, DVDs etc.

Watched it. Thought it was quite good and I liked the references to Arkwright. Bit too many names though and David Jason's accent slipped but enjoyed it.

Getting ready to watch it after din dins tonight. I`ve seen mixed reviews on it, so I`ll decide for myself. I only want to watch it for the great cast list. I enjoyed the original OAH, so I wanted to give this a go.

Yes, it wasn't too bad...I was dreading it ..but.....overall it's got promise
Although it's strange isn't it..in the old episodes Granville was supposed to be years younger than Mrs Featherstone (Stephanie Cole), now he looks older than she does and is in fact a year older than her
Lots of good cameos too .. Johnny Vegas, Mark Willians, Brigit Forsyth and Barry Chuckle

Thought it was very poor - relied far too much on 'guest' appearances, and I thought David Jason really struggled. I think they should have left it well alone. ...and you say 'it's got promise' Nick, as though implying it's coming back full-time? I thought it was a one-off?

You know what the BBC are like Paul..any hint of a thumbs up and they have a series commisioned and written before you can say 'relying on nostalgia' I think that the general problem with it is that Roy Clarkes writing is now a bit old fashioned, he wrtites as if we are still in the post war days with old fashioned shops and old battleaxes in the mould of Ena Sharples ... those days are gone

I agree about the writing - it's just very 'old hat'.
For example, I could see the joke about the anchovy paste coming from a mile off.
The original Open All Hours is still funny, but somehow this just didn't work as a perceived 'old-style' comedy.
And however people may rate David Jason, he ain't no Ronnie Barker, and Open All Hours (to me) is unthinkable without him.

It was interesting to see if it had moved on any. I think the trouble was they tried to cram too many characters in it. I was interested to see 'Granville' standing next to the picture of 'Arkwright' and realising they were now the same age!! I don't think it would stand a series.

As somebody has said on the Points Of View messageboard, they wouldn't dream of re-doing Fawlty Towers with Manuel in charge and no sign of Basil, so why do this? Although knowing the BBC............

Apparently, from what someone told me yesterday on Facebook, there will be a series depending on how this does. I agree about too many 'faces'. Too many programmes rely on their 'all star cast' these days. The scenes were too short to squeeze them all in.
Actually, Fawlty Towers with Manuel in charge could be funny because he was so bad at his job waiting.

It was good to see 'Shelley Unwin' from Corrie in it. Is the bloke who plays Granvilles son the same actor who is one of the main characters in Hebburn?

Not a main character - no. He played Ralph, Pauline's boss when she was working at the estate agent's (maybe 2 episodes?).
You probably remember him better from Emmerdale - he played Jake Doland for quite a while, who I remember as being a chef at the Woolie (definitely remember seeing him in chef's 'whites'). He was somehow linked to the Laurel 'baby swap' storyline too, and had a brief fling with the gorgeous Jasmine, but TBH I wasn't watching Emm full-time at that point in time, so details a bit fuzzy!

According to Digital Spy, it topped the Boxing day ratings...that will probably give it the green light for a series.!

If they do, I hope they have longer scenes and drop the 'all star cast'.

Oh there were a couple of newspaper comments saying the anchovy thing was a copy of something else. But if they'd bothered to watch properly, they'll have heard him say he was taught by the best. Therefore of course the sales technique would be the same.

I think the only reason it topped the Boxing Day ratings is because of the curiosity and nostalgia element

Of course!!! He was the one who used to annoy Pauline by ringing the bell everytime he made a sale. Thank you Paul...you played a blinder. Have a *K* for unravelling this tired brain. And I do remember him from Emmerdale now that you mention it. His parents were the the ones whose baby Arthur was swapped with Daniel at the hospital. The bloke who played his Dad also briefly played Deidre`s pottery teacher in Corrie.

ITV have revived Birds of a Feather after BBC just wanted to make a Xmas ep. Wonder if that will get good ratings?
