I should think at her age (87) she is more of a token character now.
Maybe it gets too much for her to work a lot.

Same with a lot sadly although Bill Roache still gets a lot. More than the others did at the same age.

CORRIE bosses say they have no plans to retire veteran actress Betty Driver who has played Betty Williams for 38 years.
At 87, Betty is the oldest member of the ITV1 soap’s cast and she is still highly valued by its producers.
Famous for Betty’s Hotpot, she will be seen in upcoming episodes behind the bar of the Rovers Return making classic comments when Fiz thinks she has contracted a tapeworm.
Executive producer Kieran Roberts told TV Biz: “She is still going stronG and enjoying the role.. Betty is one of the Street’s great traditional characters who seem to have been there forever.
“It’s always been our aim to keep a great mix of contemporary stories with older, more traditional characters.
“Comedy and tragedy combined with very clever writing has always been a trademark of the Street.
“Though we have powerful storylines involving Bethany being taken to hospital after taking ecstasy tablets coming up, there are plenty of comic moments in the pipeline.
"They include Vera getting orgasmic on a massage chair and lecherous Dev making an idiot of himself.” The Sun

Kieran Roberts is a twat. He killed all comedy when he was producer and sidelined the older cast except Ken and Emily (briefly) so should shut his cake hole.

He did an excellent job after taking over from Kieran, who screwed that up too with its doom and gloom and lack of humour. I've actually been wondering for a while now if Steve really is still there. This isn't the first time Kieran has been the spokesman when it's usually the producer. When Kieran left in around Aug 2003, Carolyn Reynolds took over until Tony Wood came along (leaving Kieran's name on the credits) and there was a marked difference in the eps afterwards.

Betty - comedy moments? Is that all she's good for now? Come on Roberts, she's got part of a family left, she hasn't interacted with any of the othe longest residents - Ken Reet, Emily etc for a very long time.

It would be nice if they brought Betty's grandson into the show as he would be in his 20s now. Or they could bring her son Gordon back. She has had no storylines recently.

I think they should sack Kieran and let Steve make the decisions

Steve had a 2 year contract I think but there's nothing to say he didn't ask to be released early. Kieran's original was meant to end December 2003 but we know his name was up there until about April/May 2004 and had gone already in August. I knew as soon as I heard Kieran was back there would be no way Steve stood a chance getting Corrie back the way it used to be. Not with that wazzock ruining everything with his sensationalism obsession.

Well Betty made an appearance this week - she is going to be staying with "our Gordon" over Christmas, nice that the writers remembered that she doesnt get on with Caroline.

It beggars belief that a woman nearly in her 90`s does more work behind the bar than that lazy cow Miz Hell. Swanning off to the hair dressers or shopping when she feels like it. She wouldn`t last 5 minutes during Annie Walkers reign

I agree totally Wendy - Annie would have certainly put that little madam in her place!

Me too. That was a great time with fantastic, memorable and original characters. Bet wasn't as tough as she tried to be though. She certainly never thought she owned the place until she did.
