Wow Pats, that`s so nice of your friend to send you that mag. I bet you treasure it huh. Jez.... did you used to watch "A Country Practice' too? That was my mothers fave show and she used to tape it when she was at work. I could never get into it though. My mother loved S&D and The Sullivans also. I used to really love H&A when it first started. In 1994, the FX channel started and they had H&A episodes on there for about a month. Then they stopped showing them. I was heartbroken. Would love to watch them all over over again from the first eppy onwards.

Yes I loved ACP, one of my fave aussie soaps. Missed a lot of the earlier episodes as it was shown at about 2pm or something and I was in school, then HTV used to show it at around 5pm during the later episodes so I watched it then. My mum loved that too. I think im too young to remember the Sullivans, think it ended in the uk in the late 80s or something.

re: the Sullivans. It used to be on at lunchtime here and I used to watch it in the summer holidays. Then about 1992-93, I was overjoyed when I found it in the US on the Faith and Values network (it later became the Hallmark channel). I was gutted when the F&V channel cancelled it and even phoned long distance to voice my displeasure in them cancelling it. I`m scared of committing myself to a new show as odds are a programme I like will be cancelled. I think i`m jinxed.

Course The Sullivans was influenced by Granada's A Family At War just like Prisoner CBH was influenced by LWT's Within These Walls. I used to like them and The Young Doctors. My now former Aussie friend used to call Sons & Daughters 'SODS'. LOL! Yes I do treasure that. Got 3 of them from the 80s somewhere. Now I buy my own when I visit Juanita. Got about 7 or 8 from trips now. LOL! I remember when I was over in 2001 they were showing repeats of ACP during the day. Got to watch one of them and it was still good.
Jez, there's no comparison between H&A and SODS. H&A is aimed at the youth market whereas SODS wasn't. Also SODS was about 2 families at war mostly.

Patsy Patsy I said Home and Away is in many way like Sons and Daughters was. Im not saying they are the same. Amanda reminds me of Patrica with all her scheming, and Morag also reminds me of Barbara in Sons and Daughters as they are played by the same actress

I know they are and she's a Scouser. Amanda is nothing like Patricia. Amanda is just greed while Patricia was more than than, mainly to get David back.

A lot of the current Home and Away storylines remind me of Sons and Daughters. Patrica only cared about money as well - why do you think she dumped David and married Gordon in the first place, then Stephen. Remember how horrified she was when Stephen's mohter died and left her money to Beryl and Patricia;s sister Margaret. She was always really mean to Beryl like Amanda is to Leah.
Home and Away is also made by the same company who made Sons and Daughters.

lol the last time I watched H&A, the original Pippa was in it!!
And she played Sister Scott in Young Doctors too. Was there a soap that Cornelia Francis wasn`t in? lol

Dont think she was in ACP or Neighbours but I cant sware to it. Morag seems to have mellowed a lot in Home and Away.

I really liked her in H&A and S&D. My fave character in H&A was Alyce(sp) the one who was married to Alf. And Tom and Pippa too. Tom always reminded me of David Palmer from S&D

Wasn't SODs a Grundy production?

Yes Grundy for the 7 network. Meant to say they were on the same channel. Im not sure who makes Home and Away, could just be 7 network themselves? Are they a production company too? I think Home and Away replaced Sons and Daughters as that ended in August 1987 and Home and Away began the following January.

7 do make their own programmes, yes. But then they also import far too many like all Australian stations. It may have been. SODs had almost as many eps as PCBH. Although don't forget 7 also had Neighbours in 1985 but axed it. Also Reg Watson took a lot of his Crossroads ideas and included them into his Australian creations.

Just found this:
Home And Away Seven, 1988 onwards Regretting the loss of Neighbours to Ten, Seven fought back with this in-house production. Like Neighbours, it has become an international hit.
So it wasn't a replacement for SODS.

Yes I knew 7 had Neighbours, thats why there were so many character changes after its first season when 10 picked it up. I cant believe Neighbours is still going, should have been aged long ago.

So it wasn't a replacement for SODS. Patsy Might still have been a replacement for Sons and Daughters though. In its final couple of seasons of Sons and Daughters they tried to make the storylines more like Neighbours hence the introduction of a lot of younger characters but obviously it couldnt compete so thats probabaly why they axed it.

Ten also got A Country Practice.
I got that info from a site about the history of Australian television (which incidentally has it's 50th anniversary this year as was mentioned in the TV Week's I brought back). SODs could have come to it's own natural end like Prisoner, The Young Doctors etc. Prisoner has just a few eps more and TYD a few more than that and all were Grundy. Neighbours is still going because it's popular overseas. If it hadn't been here before other countries picked it up like Germany, they would have axed it. It was like Cagney & Lacey. It was axed in the States but due to the popularity here they changed their minds.

In the 80`s, there were lots of great Australian shows and soaps. We used to be spoilt for choice. It hasn`t really taken the US by storm though which is a huge shame. To give Australia its due, it tried to break through the barrier, but the US just didn`t take it to their hearts like the UK did. The only Australian show that they show on a regular basis here is Kath and Kim on the IFC channel. They used to show a lot of Dame Ednas shows at one time too, haven`t seen any for a while though. There are tons of Australian movies on Netflix to rent too... am spoilt for choice there. Unfortunately not Neighbours, S&D or Oz soaps though

I know they did their own version of Prisoner with the help of the bosses at Grundy. If I remember rightly Barry Humphries was on his way to the States to work when I met him in that lift at Gatwick. It was certainly around 1999 he was working over there. Did you ever see Return to Eden? I have a feeling that was mainly for the US market because of all the glamour. Don't know if it was ever sold there or not though. I think Australian TV always has a market here like we do there. Pity though they are making less and less home-grown dramas. There was a series Juanita loved when I was over in 2001 set in a hospital (can't remember the name) but I think they stopped making that.

Prisoner had 692 episodes I think so less than Sons And Daughters which had 972. However Prisoner was either 45 mins of 1 hour (1 hour here I think because of the adverts!)
A Country Practice was 1 hour long but on ITV in the UK many regions used to split the episodes in half to fit in a half hour slot. I remember reading that Ten took over ACP after 7 axed it - I wonder why Ten kept on picking up 7 axed soaps! It only lasted 1 season on Ten though.

Oh you have been busy looking up on the Net. I know it did because it axed most of the cast and changed the setting. The ones repeated in Australia when I was there in 2001 were half hours but they were 7's episodes. Well if you'd seen Ten's output you could understand why they pick up axed shows from rival channels. LOL! Patsy

HTV never showed the Ten series of ACP but I saw a few episodes on Westcountry as I had that on cable and it wasnt anywhere near as good

You had HTV West too Jez? Cool, so did we Does anyone remember Richmond Hill? It was on around 1988/89. I absolutely loved that soap. There was one main character on there who really reminded me of Angie Watts from EE. Every few months for the past 16 and a half years I have had very vivid dreams about S&D. In almost every dream I`ve had is where S&D is about to start on tv. Just as the intro music finished to start the the show I always woke up....every time. Weird huh

Pats....was it called Blue Heelers?

Post by sallywebster on May 15, 2006 9:36:34 GMT
HTV West and Westcountry CorrieGirl - HTV West took the same episodes as HTV Wales did but Westcountry was at a different stage in the storylines with ACP. Now ive got ITV West and ITV London on NTL, as well as ITV Wales of course.
Blue Heelers was a police drama I think. HTV never showed it but im sure other ITV regions in the uk did.
