I hated Bet in her later years in the show, and she was never one of my fave's anyway even watching older episodes from the 70s and 80s.
And as for her comeback in 2002 - terrible!

I thought her second comeback was good..where she helped Liz and Jim while he was on the run...and her closing line to Karen McDonald "Seeya Cruella" was brilliant

the reason Bet Lynch left was because Julie Goodyear couldn't cope with all the work because she smokes so much - same for her comeback in 2002.

Bet was rubbish. Before they paired her off with Alec Gilroy, she was great. But then came in the shoulder pads and wigs like it was Dynasty and the character, though it was a good double act with Alec, was becoming a caricature and her acting got worse. 2002 was ridiculous. 2003 was more so since Cecil Newton was always more of Alec's friend than Bet's and the whole marriage thing was stupid.
Alex, depending on which papers you read in 2002 she couldn't cope either because she was stressed after doing panto or some such claptrap. Or the working conditions had changed (though Maureen Lipman had no probs adapting and she came straight via the Golden Jubilee celebrations in London from a working cruise!). Or she couldn't cope becuase she was throwing her weight around and no one was paying her any attention.
Good riddance to Bet!

I didnt mind her so much in the 1999 Brighton episodes but ive never really been fond of the character. She was OK in the 70s and 80s but not a patch on Elsie Tanner in the "tart with a heart walking wounded" role. I hope she never comes back - Hilda, Mavis and Jenny can come back but NOT Bet!

Not Jenny because she'll just be fulfilling the disasterous Sharon Gaskill role of giving Reet something to do. But yes to Mave and Hilda and loads of others. Bet should NEVER be brought back ever again. All that guff about "The most popular character". Everyone knows that's Hilda. Julie Goodyear was probably way down the list and they'd got through all the ones who refused before she jumped at it to raise her profile.

Patsy Probabaly - be interesting to see which actors get plaques outside Granada when they die - currently Elsie, Annie, Ena and Alf have them, bet Julie Goodyear will as well - Barbara probabaly wont when she goes. Id like Chris Collins to come back, just for something nice to look at. ;D

LOL Nick! Yes, Jezziekins. How can you? Bill Roache will. Maybe Eileen Derbyshire and Betty Driver. Not sure about Barbara. They're going to need a bloody big wall for all those who should! Patsy

Patsy Betty Driver should, as should Bill Roach. They could put some up by the other enterance to the studios. I think Jean Alexander will get one as well.

Bet Lynch/Gilroy in the 70`s and 80`s would never work in the millenium, and here`s why...... a) Part of Bets great performances was partly due to the late but great Annie Walker. b) Because she`s a lot older now, and wouldn`t fit in with todays cast. c) Bet was part of the Rovers. Now she`s left, there wouldn`t be any decent plots for her. d) Not many of the cast would know her, so her performences wouldn`t be all that believable. e) Alec has already left, so there are no ties that could ever bring Bet back to Weatherfield.

I agree about Annie. Lots of Bet's better scenes were due to Annie/Doris Speed and also Betty and Fred in the Rovers.

That's a good summing up, CorrieGirl. There's a few people like Ken, Emily and Reet (or the feud with Reet) but at over 60, she's too old for the tarty barmaid look. My dog Barbara HATES Julie Goodyear with a vengeance. When she was 3-months-old, she tried to destroy the fan card I had. And in 2003, I played some of that of Reet and Bet from the year before. Everytime JG was in close-up, she'd turn away, checking out of the corner of her eye. But she'd watch again when Barbara Knox had the close-up. So that's a perfect reason to keep her away from the telly forever! LOL!
I preferred Betty back in those days too. She had more to do and was funnier.

Betty is still good but she gets bugger all to do, but that could be what Betty Driver wants at her age.

Oh she does, though Graeme wouldn't agree. She ADORES her namesake. If Goodyear had got any award at the soapies, Barbara would not have stood out of respect like she did for Barbara Knox. ;D Though I'm keeping EVERYTHING away from Louise because she'll eat anything regardless. LOL! True. But at least she has more dialogue now and funny lines instead of the, "Hot pot? I'm retiring. No I'm not" of recent years. Patsy

Do you have disagreements over that like we do about KF and the quality of recent Corrie? He likes Sally though so thats good, Yes she has had more lines recently rather than "ta lovvie" or "hot pot ken?"
