The writers have lifted this idea entirely from Friends.
Rachel (Audrey) declares her long-denied feelings for Ross (Fred) in order to wreck his marriage to Emily (Bev).
Shameless plagiarism!

Would Audrey have suddenly developed these feelings if they weren't writing Fred out? It reminds me of the contrived proposal rejection making Archie bugger off.

Well Fred is about to marry Bev so Audrey suddenly decides she wants him. Its probably because she is lonely yet she is reluctant to get together with any man since her Alfie died.

She wasn't that reluctant to cop off with Keith so he could show off his stuffing skills. Then they contrived her suddenly being bored with him to write him out.

She is going to lose a good and old friend if Fred goes off to the hills - and if she really had wanted to marry him all along she would have found some way of communicating it to him before now.
However, her usual seduction technique ie, come to my hair salon and I'll give you a quick trim - wouldn't work on Fred, for obvious reasons.
Now she might have missed her chance and will have to watch Bev, the gold-digging floozy, going off with her man.
I think she's just a bit jealous, doesn't really want to keep him for herself after all, just resents the fact that some common barmaid has snapped him up when she considers herself to be a bit posher than your average back-street crimper.

I`ve always felt sorry for Bev. I don`t see her as a gold digger though, I see her as a lonely old woman who sees Fred as her last chance at happiness. After all, her daughter died, her other daughter went to live somewhere else. Dunno what happened to her hubby, perhaps he died too. I`ve said it before and I`ll say it again.....Audrey and Archie are perfect together.

Desperate old woman the way she clinged to Ciaran and Charlie. I don't see her as a gold digger either. I think she was a widow when she was first introduced. Can't remember entirely though.

Yes Bev's husband died. I dont think she is a gold digger. She just wants a bloke.

ANY bloke. She's the opposite of Reet who just wants any bloke with wads of cash! Oh she missed out with Fred, espeically with him ending up owning his own pub. She'd have been in heaven but he wouldn't have lasted as long as he has if he's wed her. LOL!

Well All About Soap seem to think Corrie have filmed 2 endings (the papers and mags always tell us this!) and that Bev and Fred might get married. So she might get the pub yet!

They never film 2 endings. Would cost too much money having to film 2 of ever subsequent scene for weeks on end. I keep saying that. They take two lots of photos which the press get.

Maybe 'gold-digger' is the wrong word.
Bev messed Fred around - went off with some bloke, and Fred had to come and rescue her.
It seems like she settled for Fred, rather than fell for him, and is understandably a bit insecure that Fred has long-standing friendships with independently wealthy women like Reet and Audrey, when she herself (Bev) only brings a hint of sex to the relationship while Fred is contributing a pub and a butcher's shop.

I was wondering if it was John Savident's idea to borrow Foghorn Leghorn's verbal tic of repeating things for Fred Elliott? It was inspired, whoever it was.

So did Audrey as I recall. Even when Audrey was married to Alf she strung Fred along by making eyes at the chauffeur Brian when Al was Mayor of Weatherfield. Audrey has had many chances of marrying Fred. I just can`t feel much sympathy for her.

yes you recall rightly Corriegirl Audrey did do that. I think what it is Audrey is scared of being lonely in her old age, even though she`s had load`s of chance`s she`s never taken them because they never quite measured up to Alf and now is green with envy because Fred has a chance of being happy in his old age with Bev and is now at this late stage rethinking how she feel`s about Fred .
