Since when has a character being dead meant they can't change history? We know how much all soaps do to fit the stuff they write. David Barlow isn't dead at all. They just pretended because he ran off with a sheep shearer called Bruce and Irma was humilated. LOL!

I never did like Irma....I couldn`t stand her voice. It made Chas Dingle from Emmerdale sound cultered and refined in comparison.

Doesn't Cheryl Murray have MS? Haven't heard about her for a long time now. I think she was in something a few years ago. May be too bad to act now.

I suppose whoever they brought back could have gone to Bessie Street School just to fit in with the plot really

I was thinking about the 50th the other day - id love to see Mavis and Hilda return. Its silly that Mave especially doesnt return as she was so close to Reet! Obviously Thelma doesnt want to return which is a shame.

I was never a big fan of Mavis, but I would love to see her return....even if just for a few weeks.
Corrie bosses shot themselves in the foot when they killed off Ray Langton. He would have been an excellent addition to the cast in the run up to Corries 50th.
What about the actor who played Jed Stone? Is he still alive? Kenneth Cope?

Kenneth Cope is still alive..he was in Brookside for awhile in it's later years...there would only be Ken and Emily who remember Jed

A former Corrie actor is set to return to the cobbles this summer.

Kenneth Cope will play the part of an elderly tenant who stands in the way of Tony’s expanding business empire.

The actor played shady Jed Stone (pictured) on the Street between 1961 and 1966.

He’s also appeared in several Carry On films, Brookside and had a leading role in 1960s television series Randall and Hopkirk (Deceased).

Is the mix of old and new a deliberate strategy by Kim Crowther?

kenneth-cope-246.jpgThe return of Jed Stone seems to me to be a brilliant move by new(ish) producer Kim Crowther to combine the history and traditions of the Street with the younger characters and contemporary storylines. There has also been a recent reference to the Ogdens (the "Lowry painting" which turns out to have been painted by Irma Ogden), another hark back to those classic years.

Criticism of the Steve Frost era often centred around the shift of focus from the older characters and the trademark humour to newer characters such as the Connors and the Mortons. I think that by bringing back Jed Stone, albeit for a short period as I presume he isn't going to be a permanent character, Kim Crowther is laying down a marker to show that she values the almost 50 years of Corrie heritage and will perhaps restore this balance. It's been said of Kim Crowther that she's "a person who is steeped in the history of the Street and believes the old guard artists are crucial to the centre of the show," and it looks like she's keen to prove that's true.

I can`t help but wonder if Kim C reads this forum...seems a bit of a coincidence doesn`t it. It`s a bit too early to say, but KC could be an asset to the show if she continues the way she`s going with Corrie history.

It was Kieran Roberts who pushed the older characters out in favour of the younger. Tony Wood brought them to the fore again but they still got stupid storylines and writing bar Blanche and Ken. Steve Frost did wonders in Emmerdale with the older characters but with Kieran as his boss perhaps he had no choice but to push them out again.

Jed Stone after all, huh? I may have a look at that. I liked Sunny Jim in those few 60s eps I've seen.
